Cologne signs Australian midfield prodigy, 21-year-old international O'Kon-Enstler heads to Bundesliga
Paul O'Kon-Enstler, the 21-year-old Australian international, is about to embark on his Bundesliga journey, becoming one of the first members of the country's new generation to land in Europe's top league. The midfield prospect showcased impressive ability on the World Cup stage and will now transfer from Sydney FC to Cologne. According to foreign media reports, Sydney FC has set his price tag at €1 million (approximately A$1.6 million), just after the two sides signed a three-year contract extension last July.
Reflecting on the World Cup elimination, O'Kon-Enstler could not hide his disappointment: "It's very sad not to advance to the next round. Seeing the veterans weep on the pitch, knowing this might be their last World Cup, really touched me." He said the experience motivates him to improve every day and strive to compete at the highest level.
O'Kon-Enstler was born in Belgium while his father, former Australian international and current national team assistant coach Paul, was playing in the Belgian league. When his father transferred to the Newcastle Jets in 2006, he moved to Australia with his family at the age of one.
Meanwhile, another Australian rising star, 18-year-old defender Lucas Herrington, has also caught the attention of European giants. Herrington currently plays for Colorado Rapids, and reportedly Barcelona, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich have all shown interest. He put in a composed performance at the World Cup but unfortunately missed a crucial penalty in the shootout. Authoritative media reveal that Herrington is valued at around A$2.5 million, and Barcelona's initial offer of A$800,000 has been rejected by Colorado.
Additionally, Nestory Irankunda, 20, saw his value skyrocket after a stunning goal in his World Cup debut. He currently plays for Watford, and the Championship club has already rejected a A$1.6 million bid from Hull City. It is reported that Irankunda's market value is now nearly double that figure, with multiple English clubs and Serie A teams expressing interest.
